Introducing…Ekoclef!
Ekoclef is a new side project, in collaboration with my old chum Ralph ‘Bass Clef’ Cumbers. We have an album coming out this month called “Tape Swap” on Ralph’s label Magic & Dreams. It will be available as a cassette and download. To celebrate, we will also be playing a couple of gigs together in London & Bristol.
The project was initiated earlier this year, at Ralph’s suggestion. We each agreed to record some musical ideas onto the first track of a four-track cassette tape, and then post the tapes to each other. We would then overdub some more ideas onto track 2, then send it back, continuing the process until all four tracks were filled. This may seem a rather out-moded and laborious method of composition, but actually it was a lot of fun and I think the results have a certain sound and feeling to them that would otherwise be hard to achieve in the digital domain.
The album will be released on 11th October, available directly from the label’s website or via Boomkat. There’s some early reviews from our friends Kek-W & Loki here and here, and the project has gained interest and support from Resident Advisor, The Quietus, Hyponik and even Mixmag(!). Ralph has posted three youtube clips to give a flavour of what’s in store…
The concerts will be held on Friday 21st October (Cafe Oto, Dalston, London) and Saturday 22nd October (FAG Studios, Kings Square, Bristol). More details at Qu Junctions.
